EVFF to focus on silent films

Our friend Robin Murray of the English and Film Studies departments at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston has sent along the full schedule (which you can review after the jump) for the seventh annual Embarras Valley Film Festival, taking place from Thursday, November 11, to Saturday, November 13. This year’s event will focus on how the achievements of filmmaker Oscar Micheaux, cinematographer Gregg Toland, and actor Charles Clary – all of whom have history in central and southern Illinois – helped shape the silent era of cinema. All lectures and film screenings will occur either at the EIU Doudna Fine Arts Center, EIU Tarble Arts Center, or the Charleston Carnegie Public Library, the latter off-campus at 712 6th St., Charleston. Not unlike the popular Alloy Orchestra appearances at “Ebertfest,” the EVFF has paired Micheaux’s key work WITHIN OUR GATES with “Little Egypt” based group Stace England & the Salt Kings, who will also play selections from their concept album, The Amazing Oscar Micheaux, during a separate performance. EVFF is co-sponsored by EIU’s College of Arts & Humanities and the Coles County Arts Council.
