FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said
We’re electing to Report from off the beaten path this week, an exercise in keeping our eyes open to the possibilities. This evening and all day tomorrow, October 6 and 7, the newly-opened Gallery Art Bar in the former NOLA space of downtown Urbana will host the 2023 Immersion Festival, a continuous display of “experimental arts” including music performance, DJ sets, meditative moments, and video installations from the likes of Matt HarsH and others; tied to the inaugural “Fall Fusion Festival” sponsored by 40 North 88 West, Immersion lasts until 1 a.m. on Friday and 2 a.m. on Saturday. And then, if you did not catch her maiden voyage as a stand-up in the makeshift comedy club spaces of downstate Illinois some 10-15 years ago, you can enjoy the current routine of ABBOTT ELEMENTARY star Janelle James on stage at the Kirkland Fine Arts Center of Millikin University in Decatur next Saturday, October 14; tickets for the performance, which starts at 7:30 p.m., run between $40 and $100, befitting of a showbiz personality on the rise. To close, Facebook algorithms recently began to show us promotion for a new Severin Films showcase, similar to the ones they’ve sponsored recently for the Normal Theater in Normal, at the Orpheum Theatre … in Galesburg, IL. Psych! The offbeat program booked for October 14 includes the Australian chiller NEXT OF KIN and the New Zealand-filmed thriller STRANGE BEHAVIOR, the latter set in a fictionalized Galesburg by the late filmmaker Michael Laughlin who grew up in Normal’s twin city of Bloomington. It’s novel and raises questions elsewhere. Will the Normal ever do a Laughlin tribute? Will the re-opened Orpheum of Champaign ever show movies? Will Ye Ed ever brave the C-U again?
