FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said
We have three quick observations about the local cinemas in our Report. First, if one looks at the next few weeks’ worth of play dates at the Normal Theater in downtown Normal, one might feel an echo of what the C-U has lost since the Art Theater shut down three years ago last week. The consecutive openings of acclaimed indie films – SOMETHING IN THE DIRT this weekend, DECISION TO LEAVE next weekend, TRIANGLE OF SADNESS the weekend after that – may all be first-run premieres in our area, and we thank the Normal in advance for bringing back David Bowie and MOONAGE DAYDREAM after Thanksgiving. And then, since their e-mail blasts haven’t let us forget it as of late, we’ll share that the Phoenix Savoy 16 + IMAX in Savoy now has “The Village Bar” for customers to look forward to if they need libations to go with their motion picture viewing. Finally, the Onarga Theater in Onarga has not shown a movie since WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING in August; hopefully, this is just an extended break for the owners and staff and not closure, given this house was the last one in our general area to open back up for business after the pandemic forced their industry to shut down. Crossing fingers!
CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History
25 Years Ago … November 1-3, 1997: University of Illinois Ph.D. candidate Grace Giorgio, recently transplanted from San Francisco to Urbana, and Red Herring Vegetarian Restaurant manager Eric Fisher, an avid cartoonist and Decatur native, launch the Champaign-Urbana Freaky Film Festival on campus to showcase wild independent cinema from across the country. Opening night takes place in the auditorium of the Noyes Laboratory of Chemistry building on the UI Main Quad, anchored by the black-and-white crime film RUNNING TIME and personal appearances by its producer/director Josh Becker and star Bruce Campbell. Two dozen shorts are presented between this event and subsequent shows the next two evenings at the Channing-Murray Foundation chapel, located two blocks away from Noyes. Freaky would “freak the hicks” annually for three more Halloween seasons, first at the just-opened Canopy Club in Urbana and then at the New Art Theatre in Champaign.
