FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said
This week, we’ll be a little less short and sweet with the three eclectic things we have for you to check out. Let’s start with an understatement: there is no shortage of horror to watch on ad-supported platforms this Halloween season, and Tubi is loaded with contemporary genre flicks if you dare to dive past the established classics and vintage cheap thrills. (Your humble editor finds that browsing Tubi on his smart phone late at night is a little addictive.) Not apparent on the surface is that Tubi also carries a fair number of documentaries, some having to do with the cinema, pop culture, fringe pursuits, and speculative history such as cryptozoology and the paranormal; the latter is where we find several guest appearances by a self-described expert on such matters, Troy Taylor, the veteran publisher at American Hauntings Ink who currently operates out of Jacksonville in west central Illinois. One of these is in TERROR IN THE SKIES, produced by Seth Breedlove for his indie label Small Town Monsters, which recounts the numerous sightings of “thunderbirds” and the “Mothman” in various corners of our scary state over the years.
Also, with the recent passing of actress Louise Fletcher and last year’s death of director Michael Laughlin, we’d like to remind our dearest readers of their offbeat collaborations. STRANGE INVADERS, also presented on Tubi, is a gauzy UFO tale starring Paul LeMat, Nancy Allen, and Fletcher about a small Illinois town that is literally not on the map and populated by bug-eyed aliens in disguise. Not on Tubi but available to view on this YouTube channel is its predecessor, STRANGE BEHAVIOR, in which Michael Murphy, Fletcher, and others play parents in the college town of Galesburg who realize their children are being preyed upon by a secretive science lab run by the wonderfully icy Fiona Lewis. Galesburg exists, of course, although the academia in this film is a fictionalized version of Knox College. Both enjoyable B-films are influenced by Laughlin’s upbringing in the Bloomington-Normal area and – surprise! – the earlier work inspired a group of amateur filmmakers from Galesburg, led by Cyrus Khazai, to create a no-budget sequel in the mid-Nineties. DEAD KIDS 2, which takes its title from the overseas release of the original, can be found here as well as on a recent Blu-ray release from Umbrella Entertainment of Australia.
To conclude, we presume the Shatterglass Films/Line Film Company production REVEALER, filmed in Champaign-Urbana in 2020 and currently streaming only on Shudder, will be more widely available online after RLJE Films releases the DVD edition on Tuesday, November 15. Until that point, one can get their REVEALER fix if one is into reading comics by picking up the Vault Comics tie-in book, Revealer #1, written and illustrated by the movie’s co-creators, Tim Seeley and Michael Moreci. Champaign’s G-Mart Comics is offering the print version and its variant covers, while the Amazon Kindle subsidiary comiXology is selling the electronic version. Revealer #1 was released on Wednesday, September 14.
