FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said
Boy howdy. I was going to preview all the Friday night happenings, but, didn’t happen. I was also going to write a bonus post or two, but, nyet. I was even going to spring a new Almanac entry on you, but, my sprung done broke down. So, we’ll go with three quick things and move right along. WGLT-FM radio went down the “tie the famous movie to localities” well this week with an article about the smattering of references in John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN and its sequels to central Illinois geography, institutions, and road routes. At least we now know where the famously fictional burg of “Haddonfield,” home-slash-battleground to “Laurie Strode” and “Michael Myers,” might have been located near Bloomington-Normal.
Also, the Herald & Review published this week a heavily illustrated update on the preservation efforts being given the Lincoln Square Theatre in downtown Decatur, which includes a very clear picture of the Art Theater’s former digital projector – yes, the one many of us paid for – anchored in place for use in its new home. The Lincoln is a surprisingly grand venue that deserves the overdue love its new board of directors and associates are giving it, yet most of the events in the early going of this era will appeal to a customer base with tastes dramatically opposite those of the Art’s typical clientele. In other words, we cringe a little at the prospects of what possibly could be shone through that lens in the future, even if films don’t factor much in their programming. Good luck, Lincoln-ian folks, and choose your fare considerately.
Conversely, we applaud the robust Halloween programming that will play the Normal Theater in downtown Normal throughout October and encourage everyone to take in a spooky flick or two over there, especially since Champaign-Urbana seems to have nothing on tap even close to their outpouring of classics and favorites. We’re lucky the Harvest Moon Twin Drive-in had already saved the day by default with their annual string of horror-themed weekends that will include the area premiere of John Isberg’s locally-made slasher, FINAL SUMMER, on Thursday, October 13, opposite (tra la!) HALLOWEEN ENDS.
