FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said
Guns. Fucking guns. Maybe at least some Republicans finally understand “societal responsibility” a little more and are choosing to not ignore it, according to CNN today (yes, I’m writing on Sunday). And, given this bluntly honest “New Rule” segment by Bill Maher that aired Friday on HBO, Hollywood needs to come to terms with the fact that “it’s only a movie” only absolves them of so much anymore. And somehow, I managed to totally overlook the occurrence of ill-timed shenanigans in late April, when the trade show CinemaCon abetted Lionsgate in premiering details and first footage of their theatrical slate including the JOHN WICK and EXPENDABLES franchises, both of which provided on-screen bluster and bullets in the Maher diatribe. Across the board, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, when will the United States of America get a grip that doesn’t involve squeezing the trigger of a firearm? Guns control and terrorize. They are not “the answer.” Better education, increased mental health services, more effective and far-reaching laws, and tempered depiction in our media and entertainment could help us all. Onward.
