FIELD REPORT DU HQ | From Wherever It May Be Said
Suddenly, the film world of downstate Illinois is waking up publicly, even though we know it’s percolated all through the pandemic, and the signs of creation and innovation emerging from our communities are positive vibes that encourage the rest of us to move forward. Looking back 100 years ago this week, it’s astounding to imagine how much our past generations had to work through in order to put a flickering image up on the screen in the first place, let alone a discernible sound in our ears. Never underestimate our capabilities or play down our accomplishments then and now, dearest friends and neighbors of Champaign, Urbana, and the cities beyond, and let’s do our damned best to keep filming, watching, dissecting, archiving, promoting, attending, supporting, and progressing in the local cinema arts. CONFIDENTIAL ALMANAC | Dates in Film Culture History
100 Years Ago … Friday, June 9, 1922: A pet project developed in parallel with a remarkable early career in electrical engineering, University of Illinois professor Joseph Tykocinski-Tykociner demonstrates a “sound-on-film” projector for his colleagues and university officials in Room 100 of what is now the Material Science and Engineering Building on campus. His apparatus is capable of reading and amplifying a “sound track” encoded along the side of a film strip, thanks to photoelectric cells developed by UI physics professor Jakob Kuntz. Friction between the inventor and his employer over patent rights to the device, along with a chilly reception from the movie industry, would thwart his dreams of it being put into widespread use. Extensive collections of his papers and other ephemera, including schematic drawings of the projection system and video duplicates of the surviving film tests, have been stored in the UI Archives since Tykociner’s passing in 1969.
