FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts
We’re adding this to the Calendar after the fact since it is worthwhile and we only found out about it early Saturday after we’d already posted. As covered in this report by WCIA-TV Channel 3, the locally-based organization Rattle the Stars has partnered with Elliott Counseling Group, Teamsters Local 26, and Busey to present the documentary THE S WORD and subsequent talks on how to help those who are contemplating suicide or battling mental illness. The first in the list below was cancelled due to the snow conditions bearing down on Champaign-Urbana and will be rescheduled as noted on the Web site for Rattle the Stars, which engages the community in discussion about suicide prevention and our youth along with related concerns. If your world has been affected by the passing of a loved one in this manner, than we don’t need to tell you that suicide is not painless and always causes a harmful ripple effect. Not unlike taking CPR classes to be more prepared to help those in physical distress, attending this outreach can help you better read the signals coming from someone who suffers mental distress and suggest ways in which you can act on their behalf. (This seems to be strictly informational and is not a class or training, please keep that in mind.) The MadPix, Inc., production of THE S WORD is directed by Lisa Klein and follows the journey of suicide survivor Dese’Rae Stage as she meets fellow survivors and remaining family members to hear their stories. All screenings are free to attend.
