FLICKER OF THE WEEK | Suggestions in Full-Motion Arts

It almost feels de rigueur that we work Art Theater Co-op fare into this section of the Calendar nearly every week, yet we can’t help but acknowledge their consistency in booking the most interesting viewing choices. Case in point this time is the critically-lauded MOONLIGHT (A24 Films), directed by Barry Jenkins and starring Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Mahershala Ali, and Naomie Harris in the gently mesmerizing story of a Miami youth who must navigate hardships, crime, and uncertain sexuality as he comes of age. Set in the recent past and told in three chapters, the beautifully-made drama reflects a complex reality for African-Americans that is not typically seen in contemporary films and may provide audiences across the board with a necessary jolt of perspective and empathy post-Election Day. Since MOONLIGHT will illuminate the Art for at least the next two weeks beginning today, Fri., 11/11, you can also clear a few moments for our other selections that qualify as “short run” and “offbeat.” We think the aesthetic qualities and historic value of DOCTOR WHO: THE POWER OF THE DALEKS (Fathom Events/BBC Worldwide), which plays the Goodrich Savoy 16 on Mon., 11/14, at 7 p.m., will supersede any hesitations one might have for spending good money on what amounts to a “very special episode” of a television series. More than 40 years after destroying the master elements of the six-episode arc “The Power of the Daleks,” which aired during the 1966 season of DOCTOR WHO and depicted the first regeneration of the Doctor from a grandfatherly type (William Hartnell) to a younger and more puckish guise (Patrick Troughton), the BBC has used ephemera such as stills and surviving audio tracks to retell the adventure as a feature-length animated movie! This presentation will include new and vintage interviews that will presumably address the creative path to rescuing “Power” from permanent extermination. On campus, the Penny Dreadful Players student theater group at the University of Illinois will stage an Obie Award– and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Flick by Annie Baker, at the Channing-Murray Foundation in Urbana at 7:30 p.m. both tonight, Fri., 11/11, and tomorrow, Sat., 11/12. First performed off-Broadway in 2013, the acclaimed character study involves a series of encounters and observations between employees of a run-down Massachusetts movie theater in line for a digital upgrade. Criticisms have touched on the often defeatist tone of the material, a relative lack of action or plot progression, and a two-act structure that somehow warrants a three-hour running time, so you have been warned if slow-burn introspection is not your bag. Attendees can judge if director Jon Murphy and his company pull off enough compelling moments to make the time investment and $7 ticket price worthwhile. “FOW” is hereby fin and almost qualifies as an anagram of “WHO,” but, not really.
